Preprint Article first published online: 01 DEC 2024 | DOI: 10.17581/bp.2025.14102 Diversity and ecology of non-diatom algae in two high-mountain lakes of Çamlıhemşin (Rize, Turkey) Bülent Şahin 1 ![]() ![]() 1 Trabzon University, Department of Biology Education, Fatih Education Faculty, Söğütlü-Trabzon, Turkey 2 University of Haifa, Institute of Evolution, Haifa, Israel In this study, reports the first comprehensive research of non-diatom algae flora in two high mountain lakes of Rize (Eastern Black Sea region of Turkey), in which 157 species of 5 phyla were identified. While Charophyta and Cyanobacteria members represented 81.92 % of the species composition, Desmdiaceae was the main family of benthic flora with 90 species. The two lakes are highly dissimilar in species richness and composition, having only 15 (9.55 %) species in common. The lakes, which are almost pristine, maintain diverse and valuable benthic algal floras, making them important sites in Turkey ecological network. Bioindication characterized the water of studied lakes as temperate by temperature, middle saturated with oxygen, neutral to low acidic pH, low saline, Class 2–3 of Water Quality and mesotrophic.
